An online source suggested installing HP Solution Center as a way to to deal with this scanner software conflict. The confict was not resolved, but I got a lot of add-ons like a Yahoo tool bar added IE, HP Updater (not that crap again), a feature to make web printing better, and more, without giving me the choice. I immediately unistalled all of it and started researching Epson scanners online. AnonymousI have a Scanjet 4p that I used with my XP system. With the upgrade to Windows 7 that was the ONE thing that would not migrate. I can understand from a consumer standpoint how hardware companies would want people to replace their old $100 scanner with a new $100 scanner every few years, but a commercial scanner that is well built and still does a good job despite it's age?
I have to throw a perfectly good scanner out the window because the company cannot provide some simple files? Like you all said, invest in another company, not Cannon either since they are no better at supporting Windows 7. AnonymousI must agree with the majority of the comments on this site. I recently upgraded my computer system which came with Windows 7. As a result my $200 HP ScanJet 4980 has been reduced to a $50 scanner. All the abilities for scanning negatives/slides, scan to print/email, gone. Thank you HP!I downloaded the drivers from HP but that is all you get.
They haven't bothered to upgrade the fully functional software to be compatible with Windows 7. I called the support and they wanted $25/hr to provide assistance (mine is out of warranty). I figure it would $25/hr to tell me 'can't help you'. This is the only HP product I have ever purchased and will never again.I checked into Vuescan.
Beware, it will not enable the ability to scan negatives/slides in the 64-bit version of Windows 7 (which I have) but apparently is fully functional in the 32-bit version.Guess I'll be recruiting a Monk when I need a copy made. AnonymousI along with probably everyone else who purchased a scanner in the days of xp am NEVER going to purchase another product from HP. Their policy of not supporting a product when you have a newer IS is pathetic and unprofessional. The ONLY reasons to have a scanner not work (especially if it is USB compatible) is 1. If we don't use USB connections and 2.
If the scanner broke. (lights won't come on. Does't go backwards and forwards)HP WAKE UP. I am an IT professional/consultant and I am telling people NOT to buy your products as you don't support them with updates.
I have a scanner and printer that are no longer listed. I am going to have to recant that statement. After it working perfectly the first time, I was never able to use it again without errors and the scanner hardware crashing. I'm not sUre how it could have operated fine the first time and then subsequently not.-After researching a lot on compatibility before I tried installing my Scanjet 4500c on Windows 7, I came to the conclusion it wasn't supported, including the HP ste not having a driver for it. I was able to install it as normal without any problems at all!September 13, 2010 7:42 PM. AnonymousGood people,For whatever it's worth, I got my 4470 c working in W7 32 bit Ultimate by setting Precision Scan Pro to run in Windows 2000 compatibility mode.Right-click on the EXE file, click 'Properties', click 'compatibility', choose 'Windows 2000' from the list.
I tried Windows XP SP 3 compatibility, but that didn't work. You get the 'Do you want this program to make changes blah blah blah' dialogue, but that's a small price to pay for getting the scanner to work.HTH, I was about to give up when this fix dawned on me. AnonymousI am under w7 32-bit and my scanner is a scanjet 4470c.Before connecting the device, I installed Xp driver PrecisionScan Pro 3.1.3.0.Downloaded and installed Freekapture ( yes, it's free ) fromScanjet 4470c and rebooted.Opened FreeKapture, clicked on Scan and selected WIA-Hewlett-Packard Scanjet 4470c 1.0 ( 32-32). Scanner works fine in this mode. If you choose HP Precisionscan Pro, program freezes. In any case, no slides or negatives scans possible but the rest works.Regards. AnonymousI spoke the HP people regarding new driversIt is all about money (your money) they want you to buy a new scanner - period!!!But like me I would now never purchase a new HP Scanner (I have several) - if I can only use it for a couple of yearsApparently (although yet to try it) - you can install a virtual XP onto Windows 7 called'Windows Virtual PC & XP Mode for Windows 7' and do it that way - not ideal but I guess it is one way to stick some fingers up at HP - keep your functionality and your money.
AnonymousScanjet 4400c IT WORKS!Like all of you, unhappy owners of HP scanners since updating to Win 7, I tried unsuccessfully to install it in the normal way and no luck. Then I started searching and I found out the “misery” that as other stated above, HP worked to add in their software a lot of not useful software like different toolbars and bla-blas and didn’t offer us, former or why not potentially actual buyers of HP products, a small support to make those scanners work. Shame HP!Here is what I did, of course inspired by reading different posts above, thanks all of you.1. I downloaded the driver from HP. I was asked for which OS and I selected Windows 2000.2.
Saved the driver (sj659en.exe) on the desktop.3. Right click on it, then Properties then choose Compatibility tab and under it in the field Compatibility mode I checked “Run this program in compatibility mode for” and I selected Windows 2000.
Then hit OK.4. I double-click the file and installed it. I choose Custom install and I installed only the main scan application and choose not to install the other options. Next, Next and finalize installation. At some point, during the installation you are asked to choose connectivity way and I selected USB (not parallel or other). I did all the installation with the scanner ON and USB cable connected, as far as I remember usually you are asked NOT TO HAVE the scanner connected.5.
I downloaded a third party imaging software for scanning like Irfan view and installed, no tips tricks here – just installed it normally.6. Open Irfan view and under the File tab choose “Select Twain Source” and then select WIA-Hewlett-Packard Scanjet 4400c 1.0 (it was also there “HP Precisionscan Pro 3.13.0 “ which I didn’t choose). Click Select tab and then close the box dialog.7. Put a file in the scanner and then use the combination CTRL-Shift-A to make that sleepy machine work And MAGIC! Last, I was thinking that probably I am lucky and after disconnecting the USB cable it won’t work. I did it in the brutal way simply disconnecting the USB cable from my laptop and connecting it again in the same port - and WORKED again.Good luck to all of you. Please post if you succeed.Costin - Romania.
AnonymousI had to reinstall XP and thus the software that goes with the HP Scanjet 4370 that worked pretty well until then.It literally took over my computer, changed the user configurations and so many things that I didn't even find my documents. I almost had a heart attack.I uninstalled it and finally I managed to restore my system to two days before and got back my computer. Now I need the scanner and I don't know how to install the basic features without all the blotware-imaging-zone crap.
I can't remember how I did it before.I will never buy a HP product again either. AnonymousHP makes it difficult to contact them if your HP unit is out of warranty (Without paying them for the privilege of talking to them.)! Snoop around on their web site and you will find a way to send a message to their CEO.I did that and actually got a person on the phone in answer to my message about how disapointed I was with HP for not having Win7 drivers for my 2200c scanner. Bottom line is they don't want to spend the money to support 'old' products, nor customer support for them.Maybe if everyone with a gripe about the drivers sent a note to the CEO, they might realize the cost to their business that they will incur by pissing off their customers. I, for one, am on the 'no more HP' band wagon!I told the person on the phone that they had lost a customer. (So what?)Write to the CEO!
AnonymousYou people are completely missing the boat. A 10 year old scanner is like a car that needs leaded gasoline. The entire tech world has changed too much for that product to remain compatible. People want new features and functions but then they bitch about change. For one, 10 year old scanners are all either 16 bit or 32 bit.
New operating systems are being written predominantly to support 64 bit. Everyone wants higher memory support and other necessary functions. Those require 64 bit OSs. Also, 10 year old scanners predate operating systems with HAL layers. The entire design for the controllers to talk to the PC is outdated. You cannot hold on to it forever. You cannot expect current generation hardware and software to be backwards compatible forever and still support the new features and needs of expanded computing power.
It isn't possible. At some point, the old hardware only works with old systems. This is not HP's fault. It is not Microfsoft's fault.
What you are expecting is completely unrealistic! AnonymousPeople I SURE understand the annoyance with this bs. However there IS an answer for Win 7 32 and 64 bit systems, it is Virtual PC XP Mode. This is the ultimate solution to ANY compatibility problem. AnonymousYOU ARE IN LUCK A SOLUTION IS IN YOUR GRASP:I got my scanjet 3500c to work miraculously and quite by accident with my windows 7. It started when I was trying to make my hp 1012 laserjet (my work horse lol) work with windows 7. Go to hp forums i followed the directions of posting 24 and 36 which made my printer operable with windows 7.
After that I went back to try a similar procedure with my scanner. When I opened the device manager to my delight my scanner was already recognized and worked perfectly without having to download any driver at all (besides the hp driver link I downloaded for my printer already) Hope that helps good luck!!Oh and shame on you HP for not providing customers with up to date software.you are creating a lot of trash for the people who could not figure this out on their own. In these times where green companies are thriving I see your less than green practices of creating unnecessary amounts of wasted trash a quick path to your inevitable demise.
I will no longer buy any of your products and everything i own from laptop to printer to scanner is all hp. Way to fail dumb asses you forgot the cardinal rule of customer satisfaction, the consumer's are the reason that you are in business and we can take that away from you at any time. AnonymousI just built my own computer with the Intel I7-2600k processor, Intel DH67GD motherboard and windows 7 professional. Was surprised I could not load my old HP 4600 scanner software (it ran under XP and this windows version was supposed to support XP software).
After searching the internet and almost giving up, I noticed when scanner was plugged in, system indicated the 4600 scanner series driver was correctly installed. Searching around I found the 'Windows Fax and Scanner' software seems to work perfectly with the this scanner. AnonymousTo Costin from Romania (who typed a post in this forum above on March 6,2011 if anyone wants to look up the post):I tried your strategy, and it almost worked for me, but when the scanner was scanning pages, the IrfanView software would always stop working in the middle of the data transfer and I'd get a popup message saying 'Windows has detected a problem with the software.IrfanView must close'My scanner is a 5370C scanner from HP, so either it depends on the scanner or maybe my computer has a problem because I had trouble getting the software to install correctly to begin with. Otherwise, thank you for giving me a place to start. Instead of IrfanView, I used the software VueScan and everything works fine. (or, if someone wants to follow Costin's instructions, in IrfanView, when you go to File, Select TWAIN SOURCE, click on the VueScan software and hit select and it should work if your selected scanner doesn't.)VueScan doesn't necessarily have to be bought, you can use it for a free trial. Since I just got the software, I don't know if I'll have to pay for it in the future.
But I highly recommend it to anyone else if IrfanView doesn't work. Also, you can install one of the newer versions of Ubuntu (within the past couple of years or later should be fine) and if your scanner has a USB connection rather than the older connections (like SCSI), you can just turn on the scanner, plug in the USB connection into the computer, and go into Applications (on the desktop menu bar at the top of the screen), then Graphics. If you have an older connection, you will probably have a hard time getting the scanner to work even in Ubuntu unless you're willing to mess with writing drivers/backends. Here's a link for Ubuntu instructions: link for the backends is on the webpage of the link I gave above, but here's the link here too: http://www.sane-project.org/sane-backends.html.
FanaudiTo Costin from Romania (2 ). Thanks for the very detailed info but we all have tried that without success. One computer is not the other.
I own a Scanjet 4470c and managed to get it running on my old pc under W 7 32-bit ( only in WIA mode ) but their is absolutely no way it will respond under W 7 64 bit on my new pc, period. The solution?
There is a workaround that's worth trying only if you own the W XP install disc with a genuine key. You can then install a virtual version of XP on your machine with or via Microsoft if you have Ultimate or Professional installed.
You also can partition your HD and install XP on the second partition. What i did is connecting a secundary HD in my machine and installing XP on it. That' s the only way to get the scanner at work with the full HP program. Otherwise, you need to buy a replacement W7 compatible device.Regards,Fanaudi, Brussels. AnonymousHi guysI have Windows 7 Ultimate and a 7400 HP Scanner. I had already tried the Windows XP Mode which doesn't help as it grabs the scanner by attaching the USB from Windows 7 (you have to click a button to Attach and Detach the scanner from the XP Mode window).
So Windows 7 has a WIA driver but the HP Twain driver will not work through HP Precision Scan Pro. Weirdly if you hit the button on the front of the scanner it uses the Twain driver to scan the image.
Paperport 14 won't work though. I set HP Precision scan to compatibility mode as discussed above but that did not help either. It seem the problem is with the HP Precision Scan software which integrates with Paperport to supply the Twain driver which HP Precision Scan will not recognise. The solution for me was to use the WIA driver, go to the settings button in Paperport and set it to use safe mode in the scanner wizard. Now it will import perfectly using Paperport's Scan button.Hope it helps someone.
AnonymousWhat happened, have a HP computer running Windows 7 Home Premiun edition (64 bit). I also have a G 4050 scanjet that worked fine for several months. The last time I used it was several weeks ago, now it wont scan anything.
When I try to scan, I get the following error, 'Error! A required component was not found or improperly installed. Re install the HP Photosmart software that came with the device, and try scanning again.' HP website for downloads is no help.
One would think their search enging could direct you to the proper software.Because of all the problems I have had with this system, scanner and previous printers, I wil never purchase another HP product. It doesn't surprise me that they want to get out of the PC business, they can't handle it. AnonymousHP needs to be put out of business. They are no longer capable of the simplist things.
No support for their products. Their standard support reply is, 'Throw it away and buy a new one.'
Think of all the perfectly good machines that will be thrown away just because HP refuses to support them. The won't even write new drivers and sell them! That's plain lazy and stupid.
Don't ever buy another HP product. If you've visited this site youy have been screwed by them. Don't let it happen again.
Hp Scanjet 3200c Driver For Windows Xp Free Download Software
Pass it along to friends. Hopefully, they will go broke and we won't have to deal with them anymore. AnonymousI have to agree with many of you on this site that expressed your disgust with HP and not supporting hardware in Windows 7. I have a scanjet 3970 which is perfectly fine - I purchased it to scan some of my old slides. I am an IT person who has in the past, sang the accolades of HP gear. Their answer on their website was essentially - sorry, you are out of luck.
It would take what, a few days to come up with a Win 7 64bit driver? No more HP computers for my company. FanaudiMicrosoft has a best workaround for non running stuff under Windows 7.
Install a virtual version of XP on your Win 7 system fromlike a charm under all Win 7 Systems excepting under W 7 Home. You don't have Professional, Enterprise,Ultimate but you own a Win XP install disc: install a virtual version of XP from, you need to buy a new W7 compatible unit, no big deal after all. SOLVED - Scanner HP Scanjet 4400c - Should WORK for ALL type of old scanners not supported anymore for HP and so onI had a post one year ago installing this HP scanner under Windows 7 Pro 32bit, successfully, for me at least.
As far as I read, those advices worked probably for some and didn’t for others. This year I received a new laptop, a Sony Vaio running Windows Home Premium 64bit with preinstalled genuine license. I used to work with Professional editions but for home use is really good Home Premium, so I am not going to install something else instead like fake license (eg. Windows 7 Pro, Ultimate.) as long as there is a valid Microsoft license. There are advantages and I really usually encourage people to have genuine license. Therefore, I was facing the same problem, but now even more complicated than in the past.
I find myself searching my files for the old instructions I made myself, followed them and failed installing my “beloved scanner”. I tried Vue Scanner, Irfan View – Nothing worked!!!!HERE IS THE SOLUTION!XP Mode Virtual Machine! I installed it on my laptop under Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and work like a charm!!! Also I installed it under Windows 7 Professional 32-bit on another PC at home and during the installation I decided to write all the steps I made.No more conflicts.
Don’t get scary. It's very easy. I have a step by step instructions but it's too long to post it here (here only 4.096 characters are accepted). If there is someone interested, send me a mail at hpcostin.romania@gmail.com and I'll send the the complete instructions.BestCostin-Romania.
SUCCESS!!!!I finally got the 7400c to work with windows 7 / 32Here is how1) - DISCONNECT AND POWER DOWN THE SCANNER - IMPORTANT -2)Go into your device manager, and if you see the 7400 printer DELETE it.If it asks for permission to delete the driver files LET it DELETE them.3) - UNINSTALL ANY Precision scan software that you have installed.4) - REBOOT. From a power down state.5)Go HERE and get THIS version of precision scan prowil down load an Self extracting archive file called Sj668enIt is NOT the latest version. But thats okDO NOT INSTALL IT YET6)GO HERE and get THIS driverNOT LET IT INSTALL; just get it.7)From desktop locate the precision scan software you downloaded. Seams I'm not the only one with issues with HP peripherals. Had a Mustek 1200UB scanner for years on XP. Updated to Win 7 pro and no drivers, but fair play its been used so much and is old, so time to get a nice shiny new scanner.
I have a HP XW8200 PC so bought an HP scanner, that'll work fine with it I think. Fine when I installed, used it, yup, working fine, shut down PC, rebooted next day, no scanner. Checked in device manager and I have unknown device, hmm, unplugged USB from scanner and plugged in, ping! Up pops scanner in the unknown device section. OK working again. Shut down, reboot, unknown device again.
No on/off button on the scanner, front buttons don't work when its not powered and starting the PC doesn't power up the scanner. It's not a USB issue as my Mustek worked fine on the same PC under XP and it's not a Win 7 issue as the Mustek even with no driver does at least power up when I plug it into my PC and boot it up. The only way I can get the HP scanner to start is unplugging the mini USB from the back and plugging it back in, yeah coz mini USB isn't going to break doing that every time is it hmmm. Insult to injury. I open an editing package I want to scan into, launch the twain to import, software opens, scan in 1 page. OK fine, turn page over to scan the next side.oh the scanner app closes after each scan.WTF?
I have to go to importTWAINscanner every time I want to scan. Painfully slow and utterly moronic. A scanner that starts when I start my PC so its ready to use without unplugging and plugging back in. A scanner app that stays open until 'I' close it.

Over the years since about 1990 I've had Mustek, Visioneer, Canon even my Pacific Image slide/Neg scanner stayed open until I finished scanning in what I want. Frankly I could have bought some generic unbranded scanner from China for half the price and had less harrassment from it than my HP scanjet200 scanner.
Sorry HP won't be buying HP products again. Piss poor and headache inducing. Maybe HP should employ real normal real life users to put into device and software what real people want, not the developers whims and marketing revenue empty headed suits. A scanner that starts when I start my PC so its ready to use without unplugging and plugging back in. A scanner app that stays open until 'I' close it. Would I like a free toolbar? No WTF has that got to do with the sheet of paper on my scanner?
HP have become yet another shill, being pimped out like a cheap hooker by advertisers and affiliates pushing bloatware out over decent products. Shame, HP 'Used' to be good. I wonder what HP guesses who of all the disappointed customers will ever buy a HP product again?I usually only get once disappointed by a brand and then i never buy a product from this brand again. Why should we users throw something away just because of a piece of lousy software,if the Hardware still works fine? Not everybody earns as much money as you do!There are ppl that build YOUR HOUSE!they HEAT YOUR ROOMS!they DIG THE POTATOES OUT OF THE DIRT FOR YOU!but we all earn quit littleSHOULD WE STOP NOW TO DIG THE POTATOES OUT FOR YOU?
